How to get an AI summary of a Discord meeting
The easiest way to get a Discord meeting summary is a bot that records the voice channel, transcribes it and posts the summary when the meeting ends. Discord has no meeting summaries of its own for voice calls, so a separate tool has to capture the audio first. With a bot, nobody has to take notes or upload anything.
What a good meeting summary contains
A summary is only useful if you can act on it. Look for:
- Decisions: what was agreed, so it doesn't get argued about again.
- Action items: who does what, by when.
- Open questions: what's still unresolved, so it isn't lost.
- The transcript: so you can check what was really said.
See this in a complete example from a fictional sprint planning meeting. It's unedited output.
Why per-speaker recording matters
An action item is only useful with the right name on it. Discord sends a bot each person's audio separately, so Renga knows who said what without guessing from voices. A tool working from one mixed recording has a harder job.
Set it up in three steps
- Add Renga to your server.
- Optional: create a forum channel and run
/settings minutes-forum, so each meeting gets its own searchable post. - In a voice channel, type
/record start.
When the meeting ends, the minutes go to the forum and by DM to everyone who attended. See the full setup.
Can you trust an AI summary?
Treat it as a very good first draft. AI can mishear names or attribute a task to the wrong person, especially when audio is unclear or people talk over each other. Adding names and team terms with /settings vocabulary helps. Have someone review important minutes, and use the transcript to check details.
What about privacy?
Everyone in the channel should know a recording is happening. Renga posts a notice when recording starts and when anyone joins, and each person can use /privacy opt-out. For sensitive meetings, /record start private:true sends the minutes only by DM. Audio and text are processed by OpenAI in the United States. See the privacy policy.
Renga is free for 2 hours a month per server, with no card needed. Add it to Discord.
