Getting started
Renga is a Discord bot that records meetings in a voice channel, then posts a transcript and meeting minutes to your server. You can be recording within a few minutes, and the Free plan needs no card.
Add the bot
- Select Add to Discord and sign in with your Discord account.
- Choose a server. You need the Manage Server permission on it.
- Approve the bot's permissions. Slash commands appear straight away.
The bot asks only for what it uses: joining voice channels, posting messages and files, adding 👍/👎 to the minutes, and managing threads, so that deleting a meeting can remove its forum post.
Record your first meeting
- Join a voice channel.
- Type
/record start. The bot joins and tells everyone it's recording. - Meet as usual. Each person's audio is captured separately, so the transcript knows who said what.
- Type
/record stop, or just leave. The bot stops about 15 seconds after the channel empties.
The minutes usually arrive within a few minutes, depending on the length of the meeting. See an example of what you get.
Where the minutes go
Without any setup, the minutes are posted in the channel where you ran /record start, and sent by DM to everyone who attended. Most teams set up a forum, so that each meeting gets its own searchable post:
- Create a channel in your server and choose Forum as the type, for example
meeting-minutes. - Run
/settings minutes-forumand choose that forum. - Check that the bot's role can view the forum and post in it.
The first message in the post holds the minutes and the files, including the MP3 when it fits Discord's upload limit. The transcript follows as messages, so Discord search finds it. Change what's sent with /settings delivery.
For a sensitive meeting, use /record start private:true. The minutes then go only by DM to attendees, never to a channel.
How it works
Discord sends the bot each person's audio separately. That's why the transcript names speakers correctly without you having to label anyone. After the meeting, the audio goes to OpenAI for transcription, and the transcript is summarized into minutes: an overview, key points, decisions, action items and open questions.
Recording stops on its own when the channel empties, after 2 hours, or when the month's hours run out. The bot warns the channel when 5 minutes are left, and you still get full minutes for what was recorded.
Languages
Run /settings language to choose two things:
- Spoken language: the main language people speak, from more than 50, or auto-detect. Mixing in other languages is fine, such as English technical terms in a Thai or Korean meeting.
- Output language: English, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Thai or Indonesian. This sets the minutes and every bot message.
Add people's names and your team's terms with /settings vocabulary to improve the transcript, and set your timezone with /settings timezone so meeting times and due dates are right. Transcripts stay in the language that was spoken. See mixed-language meetings.
Privacy and consent
- The bot posts a notice when recording starts, and mentions anyone who joins later.
- Anyone can run
/privacy opt-out. The bot stops recording their voice in that server and deletes what it already recorded of them in that meeting. - Audio is deleted automatically after 7, 30 or 90 days, depending on the plan.
- Delete a whole meeting with
/record delete.
Tell your members that your server records meetings, in addition to the bot's notices. See the privacy policy for details.
Plans and hours
Hours count the real length of each meeting, per server per month. Meetings under 1 minute don't count. Check what's left with /usage, and see plans and pricing.
